Hot on the heels of similar indie hip-hop acts like Atmosphere and The Cool Kids, The Knux (aka brothers Kintrell “Krispy Kream” and Alvin “Rah Almillio” Lindsey) separate themselves from their peers by adapting a musical style unlike anything before. Citing obvious influences such as Outkast and De La Soul, The Knux also incorporate grungy guitars, spacey synth and indie-rock and house dance tracks to accompany their slick lyrical flows.
The album kicks off with “The List,” using a strong Prodigy-esque industrial sound fused with metal guitar licks, and the momentum only builds from there. Summoning the warehouse rap battle, “Parking Lot” showcases Krispy Kream and Ra Al Millio’s freestyle talents. The lyrical content of “Playboys” isn’t the most original, but what The Knux deliver, on top of what could easily be mistaken for a Bloc Party tune, will make you want to move.
The beats on the duo’s debut, Remind Me In 3 Days…, come from every angle: heavy drum-and-bass (“Train”), chilled-out funk (“F!re (Put It in the Air)” ), and dancey indie rock (“Powder Room”). Meanwhile, Krispy Kream and Rah Al Millio spit rhymes chocked-full of wit, mocking Starbucks elitists (“Cappuccino”) and rich socialites (“Daddy’s Little Girl”), with sing-along choruses and handclaps aplenty (“Bang! Bang!,” “Roxxanne”). When these guys come out on stage, you’ll be on the dance floor doing Elaine’s “little-kicks” dance with the rest of them. Guaranteed.
